Madaline's Closet

A non-profit organization that exists to meet physical and emotional needs of long-term care residents in Central Maine. Through visitation and distribution of clothing, shoes and personal items, we seek to instill joy and dignity to those in our community who are often forgotten.

Our Story

Arthur and Madaline Tatlock were an amazing couple.  They met in a shoe shop in Gardiner in 1941. Their attraction was immediate but love would have to wait. Just months after meeting, Dad shipped out with the Marine Corps.  Mom joined the WACs, serving stateside.  Love blossomed as they exchanged letters.  Married at the war’s end, their love endured over 68 years.  They were one of a shrinking number of couples who kept the vow, “til death do us part.”

Arthur & Madaline’s love of God, family and country were evident as they raised six children, attended church and local sporting events, and served in their community.  When Dad retired in 1975, they split their time between Maine and Florida.  Wherever they went they drew people in with their warmth and fun-loving spirit.

When they were well into their 80’s and the flame of love was still strong, their earthly bodies declined.  Although they’d each won battles with cancer decades earlier, other debilitating illnesses began to take their toll.  They moved into Maine Veterans’ Home where they shared a room and continued to shine.  Though blind, Mom sang along with all the old songs for she knew them by heart.  Dad was right at her side singing. Dementia may rob many memories, but there’s something special about music that stays with you.

Both Mom and Dad passed at the VA Hospice Unit surrounded by family, one in 2014 and the other in 2015.  We are so grateful for the wonderful care they received and want to express our appreciation in a tangible way.

“Legacy is not leaving something for people, it’s leaving something in people.”  Madaline’s Closet was created out of a desire to pass on all that Mom and Dad instilled in us.
